Multilingualism is a Super Power No Matter What They Say
Jan 09, 2026Sometimes academic research simply repeats what we in the practice, in the classroom, in the field, already know. It can be frustrating, for sure, but it's also validating.
Recently, at the University of Miami researchers concluded some important and necessary points: Multilingualism is associated with cognitive improvements and it's also associated with improvements in autism symptoms. Why does this matter? Because as this administration seeks to vilify and nullify bilingualism and autism, education shines a light on the possibilities. Supporting multilingual speakers is an investment in our society. Funding the education and services of multilingual speakers is smart. See this point from the summary for yourself:

Multilingualism has always been a good thing and its promotion builds equity. That's what power grabbers are afraid of. Additionally,

Multilingualism promotes empathy and open mindedness. Supporting students' home languages, the acquisition of new languages, and simply their interest in languages other than their own is GOOD FOR ALL OF US. It is good for society. It is good for democracy. Maybe that's why people don't want it?
It is up to us, educators, to stick to science; to stick to facts. To push forth not an agenda (as they want people to believe), but stand up for love, truth, and people. We teach humans, not subjects or books. We teach people who participate in the society that we live in. Want kind of society do we want? I don't think too many of us want this one... so, we must teach for the future we want and the people who are going to shape it are sitting in front of us today. Let us meet the moment.
